Today was a pretty easy day of travel. We started in the Grand Canyon and headed to Zion. There was plenty to see in between, but we wanted to make sure we got to our campsite in time to make dinner.
We made some quick oatmeal before packing up camp and heading out. We planned to meet in Page to grab lunch, but distractions came up. Alex and first stopped at a Navajo market to look at some trinkets. We didn’t have great service, but were able to understand that Tim and Elyse stopped at a General Store on the way to Page. We met up, looked at more trinkets, ate some Fry Bread (exactly what it sounds like - fried dough), and were off to find Horseshoe Bend.
A super cool canyon below the otherwise flat landscape
When we got to Horseshoe Bend, it was packed. There’s a small parking lot, and it’s a big tourist attraction. We almost gave up on it, but we both found parking spots. It was once again very hot (hot in the summer in the desert? weird), so we quick hiked over the sand dune/mound to see the view, and headed off. Places like this are not my cup of tea - there were way too many people going to lookout the same thing. There are many other cool canyons with fewer people and better views, so we continued on to Safeway for food for the next few days.
We were all hot, tired, and hungry, but we somehow made it through shopping without fighting and ate lunch in the Safeway parking lot. Once we finished eating and repacking the cooler, we were finally off to Zion. We were planning on trying a day hike, but ran out of time, some went directly to our Goat Farm campsite. We couldn’t get park camping for night #1, but we were fairly close by.
In an unexpected turn of events, we found water to swim in! Right down the road from our “campsite” (an open field) was the Virgin River which we needed to get to. It was a quarter mile (max) hike down to the river which was surprisingly warm, similar to bathwater.
After cooling off, we went to our campsite to find out there wasn’t potable water, we weren’t able to have fires (we already started cooking our dinner over the fire when a neighbor came by to tell us to put it out), and there were cockroaches all over the place. It honestly wasn’t terrible, just super random, and we all rolled with it.
We finished cooking our dinner (chorizo, potatoes, and broccoli, with an app of bread and boursin cheese) on the fire before putting it out, Alex and Elyse went to a brewery and filled up around 12 liters of water, and we all had a few good hours of sleep before waking up for the Narrows the next day.
Not a ton of pictures today, as we were driving most of the time, but that’s the way it goes.
Is vertical or horizontal a better landscape?
