Flies EVERYWHERE

7/12/2018

Happy Birthday to my Mom! I tried calling in the morning, with no answer. We don’t have much service here, but I’ll try again later when I do have service.

We woke up at 6am made some yogurt/granola/fruit bowls before heading to Old Faithful. Yellowstone is definitely a park we plan to get up early for because it gets so busy. It took about 60 minutes to get to Old Faithful, and our timing was perfect. We walked up, waited for about three minutes, and it went off. It goes off every 90ish minutes, so we got super lucky not having to wait around.

We then wandered the other hot springs and geysers in this area, and headed off (see the bottom for all the hot spring pictures). We were going to stop by the Lower Geyser Basin, but it was already absolutely packed, so we skipped this. We headed to Sentinal Meadows Trail, for a more private view of the park. The beginning wasn’t bad, and the entire trail wasn’t actually bad, but the flies got insane about halfway through the trail. The flies did not stop. It was miserable.

I think there are twelve flies just on my butt/back of my legs

Once we finally finished the hike (again, it was beautiful, just annoying with bugs) we headed up towards Mammoth Springs. It was a bit of a drive, but totally worth it. We were going to stop by on the way out in a few days, but we had some extra time today and wanted to spend a little more time there. On the way we found a canyon with swimming, so we pulled over and went for a quick dip. There weren’t great jumping spots, but it felt good to get in the water.

After gazing at the ridiculous hot spring and land formation we decided to find showers and a dinner spot. I wanted to go somewhere “fancy” (relative term, considering we cook most of our meals on a camp stove) so I looked up the park restaurants, and only one of them looked fancy enough for my desires this evening. However, it said we have to have reservations.

After a quick shower, I called from the park phone to the restaurant, and the only reservations they have left were at 8:30 or 9:30, so I snagged the 8:30 reservation. I was already super hungry, so I wasn’t sure I would make it, but I did. We went to the big Yellow Hotel lounge for cocktails and chatted with some other folks before getting dinner. I tried to call my mom one more time. We didn’t have service and there wasn’t wifi at the hotel, so I ended up using a hotel employees personal cell phone. Unfortunately there was no answer - I think they were out to dinner celebrating obviously. After a wonderful evening and dinner we headed back to camp and called it a night, since it was already fairly late.
