Another early wake up, 5:30 this time, we cleaned up camonquick before heading to Yosemite. It was a really long day of driving and was exhausting just being in the car for so long. We switched driving a few times which definitely helped, but 11 hours is still 11 hours in a car.
The change in environment was probably the most interesting part of the drive. We left the cool, damp, 40-50 degree northern coastal California for the inland california deserts. After taking the last scenic drive through big trees, the temperature hit over 100 degrees. The few minutes we spent outside the car were incredibly hot, and there were people working outside all day.
We stopped to get cherries and mango from a woman whonwas working under a tent at an intersection, but with no car. She got dropped off on a busy corner to sell fruit all day in the heat, with no option to leave and call it a day early. She’s obviously tougher than me in the heat, but that sounds miserable.
We were going to stop for dinner in Groveland, an hour outside of Yosemite, but we decided to spend the night! There were rooms available at a good price, and it meant no tent to set up/take down, a shower, and a more relaxing night sooner. Best decision ever. We’ll have plenty of camping these next few days anyways.
Groveland is amazing. We’re staying in a small “miners cabin” in the back of the hotel. We it food and beers from the hotel kitchen and it was surprisingly delicious (pheasant sausage with cheesy polenta and pumpkin gnocchi).
Relaxing dining area
We wandered around town, but it’s a Sunday night so most things were closed, including the once ice cream shop 😩ðŸ˜. Off to sleep tonight —> tomorrow is an early morning of packing before backpacking!!
